Causes and risk factors
The exact cause is unknown. It is caused due to sensitivity to one of the components of sunlight especially ultraviolet rays [UV rays]. It occurs in women aged between 20 to 40 years. It is seen in areas where there is rare sun exposure. It occurs in spring season or early summer. In winter, vacation to sunny areas can cause the condition. The eruption disappears as summer progresses.
Clinical presentation
The symptoms include rash which comes after exposure to sun for minimum 20 minutes. The rash looks reddened with small raised spots or blisters. Patient experienced itching or burning of the lesion. It is seen on exposed body parts.The common sites include arms, back of hands, chest, lower legs. The rash persists for a week and longer if sun exposure continues.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the dermatologist helps in diagnosis. Routine blood tests are recommended. Skin biopsy is advised. Phototesting is done which helps in diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment involves topical medications, anti itch creams, sunscreen lotion. Medicines like analgesics, anti histamines may be required. Further treatment consists of phototherapy which will also help in managing the condition.
Other Modes of treatment
The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating PMLE. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms. Similarly the ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbal medicines and synthetic derivates are also found to be effective in treating PMLE.
