Sacral Dimple

A sacral dimple is a small depression of skin of back just above the buttocks. It is present since birth.

Causes and risk factors

There is no significance of sacral dimple and is a congenital condition but there can be an underlying cause such as spina bifida or tethered cord syndrome in few.

Clinical presentation

A small indentation just above the buttocks on sacral bone. It may be covered with a tuft of hair, discolouration of skin, skin tag may be seen.

Investigation

Medical history by the patient’s parents and Clinical examination by the paediatrician helps in diagnosis. Investigation depends if there is presence of hair, discoloration of skin, skin tags to rule out underlying cause such as ultrasound or MRI for spinal cord deformity.

Treatment

Treatment depends upon the underlying cause. No treatment is needed for sacral dimple.
