Swimmers Itch

Swimmers itch is defined as a rash which is caused due to a parasite named schistosomes, which harbor in the bodies of water snails or water mammals. As the parasite is more commonly found in summer season, the prevalence of this rash is at peak during summers.

Causes and risk factors

Swimming itch is caused due to a parasite named schistosomes. This parasite complete its life cycle in the body of the water snail or aquatic animal. During its life cycle the larvae of the parasite leaves the body of the snail and swim in the water in search of a new host. During such times if it comes in contact with a human being it gains entry into the skin thus continuing its life cycle and resulting in signs and symptoms. People who usually swim or play at the sea shore, people with weak immunity and sensitive skin are more prone for developing the swimmers itch.

 

Clinical presentation:

The symptoms are usually mild; in rare cases they are aggravated and become severe. The manifestations are seen 48 hours after the infection. The complaint usually lasts for about a week. The patient presents with complaints of redness of the affected area. Small tiny red eruptions are seen. Itching occurs. Tingling sensation can be felt. Severe itching can lead to oozing of the blood. On the contrary itching itself can aggravate the complaint and give way for secondary infections.

 

Investigations:

Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and by reviewing the history of the patient of any recent visit or outing. There is no specific test available for diagnosis of swimmers itch.

 

Treatment:

The dermatologist can recommend corticosteroid ointment. Use of calamine lotions (Not for prolong use in dry skin) is advised. Maintaining of good skin care needs to be implemented. Swimming should be carried out in well hygienic pools and having bath before and after is must.

 

Other modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up the symptom. Taking into consideration the symptoms in holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. . The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
