Causes and risk factors
The infection is caused due to a parasite name trichomonas vaginalis. The infection is transferred from the infected person to other during sexual intercourse. Sharing of sexual toys which are infected can also transmit the infection. In women the parasite infects the vagina from where it travels to urethra; similarly in men also the parasite infects the urethra, the prostate gland and the head of the penis.
Clinical features
Many patients remain a symptomatic while a few develop symptoms. The complaints are seen 3- 30days after the infection. Women complaints of thick yellowish green abnormal vaginal discharges which have a foul smell. Urination becomes painful and lead to burning pain while passing urine. The discharges evokes itching in vaginal area .Itching aggravates the complaints. The women experiences pain during intercourse. At times pain in lower abdomen is felt. In men swelling and soreness at the head of the penis occurs. Pain during ejaculation occurs. The pain is also experienced during micturation Increased micturation is seen. Thin white discharges from the penis is seen. Infection acquired during pregnancy can lead to various complications like low birth weight baby or premature delivery.
Investigations
The diagnosis is usually done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the per vaginal and rectal examination is carried out by the gynecologist. Routine urine and blood test are done. Culture examination of the vaginal discharges are recommended.
Treatment
Both the sex partners should be treated. Administration of medication is the first line of treatment. Oral antibiotics are administered. Practicing safe sex is the only method to avoid the infection. Avoidance of multiple sex partners and use of protection during intercourse is the best preventive measure. Sexual intercourse should be avoided until the symptoms subside.
