Women and gynecology issues: Know the facts

Knowing about gynecological health issues can help women to deal with them successfully and lead a healthy life.

  • Painful period

    Onset of menses at puberty can be associated with some discomfort and pain. This gradually subsides with time as the flow is regularized. Hot water bath, taking rest, a slow walk can help relieve pain and discomfort. Regular exercise is the best way to get over the discomfort. Severe pain warrants investigation.

  • Pregnancy bleeding

    Bleeding in antenatal period should not be ignored or taken lightly. Bleeding during pregnancy can’t be hereditary. It can be suggestive of serious problem. Consult obstetrician to find the cause.

  • Pill fact

    Emergency contraceptive pills should only be taken during emergency within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. It may not work if taken later or more than once in the same cycle. The chances of failure are high. Pills are not 100 percent safe. Consult a doctor before you take them. The same goes true for abortion pills.

  • Irregular period

    It is a misconception that irregularity of menstrual cycles will cease after marriage. If the irregularities are present before marriage, it will continue even after marriage. These irregularities are usually related to hormonal imbalances or some uterine problems and not with the sexual activity of the woman.

  • Flow fact

    Duration of flow can vary normally from two-seven days. But, if pads are required to be changed every two hours or if the flow exceeds more than a week, visit a doctor.

  • Premenstrual blues are not always menopause

    Premenstrual troubles do not essentially point to imminent menopause. This is a false perception. Conditions like anxiety, depression, thyroid disease, chronic fatigue and irritable bowel may mimic premenstrual blues. Get them overruled.
