Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of passive aggressive disorder is not known. Some genetic and environmental factors may be responsible in development of the disease.
Clinical presentation
Symptoms of passive aggressive disorder may vary from person to person. Symptoms include – the person is being angry about a specific situation or a person. , but he/she does not express anger or animosity. He/she may prefers to get rid of the situation or the individual by avoiding, walking away from the scene, etc. He/she may acts unsocial. He/she has the tendency to blame others. He/she has a habit of ignoring his/her responsibilities by making excuses. Person claims forgetfulness to avoid responsibilities. Inefficiency on purpose, a feeling of resentment is seen. They do not express anger or hostility, but in fact are hostile and angry. The person is always complaining. Opposing other people’s suggestions is commonly seen. There is habitual criticism of solutions. There is an exaggeration of issues. Victimhood is seen. Self-pity is observed.

Medical history by the patient and clinical evaluation by the psychiatrist or psychologist helps in diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment involves psychotherapy. It involves behavioral technique, cognitive behavioral techniques, and psychoanalytical techniques. Anger management techniques, and relaxation methods – controlled breathing, visualization, etc., are helpful. Psychological counseling is helpful. REBT [rational emotive behavioral therapy] will help in treating the condition effectively. Medications such as anti-depressants or antipsychotic drugs will also help in managing passive aggressive disorder.
