CUNEIFORM

CUNEIFORM

The cuneiforms are the three bones located in the top middle portion of the feet. These bones are called medial, intermediate, and lateral cuneiform bones. They are located between the navicular bone of the foot and the first, second, and third metatarsal (elongated bones of the foot). The medial cuneiform is located on the inner side of the foot. It connects to the big toe. The intermediate cuneiform is located between the other two cuneiform bones. It aligns with the second toe. The lateral cuneiform is the third bone aligning with the bones of the third toe.

Function

These bones help to create the arch of the foot called a transverse arch. The bones help in the movement and support of the body.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

Injuries to these bones can vary from fractures and dislocations to chips and ligaments injuries. Ligament injuries are difficult to diagnose.

Interesting fact

Heard of the Lisfranc joint? The point of junction of cuneiform bones with metatarsals (small elongated bones of the foot) in front is called as Lisfranc joint. Ligament injury at this location leads to malalignment of cuneiform bones and metatarsals called as Lisfranc fracture. This was a common fracture earlier time and occurred when the foot of the rider got caught in the stirrups as he fell off the horse and needed amputation of foot!
