FIBULA

FIBULA

The fibula is the long and thin bone of the lower leg extending from knee to ankle. It is located on the outer side of the leg. It is the thinnest of all the long bones. The tall, slender appearance makes it unique.

Function

The fibula functions as an ankle stabilizer. It also supports the other bone of the lower leg called the tibia. It is a primary location sought for when bone marrow donation is required for transplant as fibula is a superb source of the blood cells for bone marrow. It has many minerals along with calcium.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

The fibula fractures typically as a result of the fracture of the other bone in the lower leg i.e. tibia. When the weight-bearing bone tibia is fractured, the fibula bone is overstressed and fractured. Downward pushes, table leg pushes, towel pulls and ankle flexors are the exercises that aid the broken fibula.

Interesting facts
