NAVICULAR

NAVICULAR

The small tarsal bone is located on the top of the foot where the foot and ankle meet. It is situated on the inner side of the foot. Bones of foot are called as tarsal bones.

Function

The bone is a part of the longitudinal arch of the foot and hence plays a role in even distribution of the weight through the bones in the foot.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

Blunt trauma caused from heavy objects rolling onto the top of the foot may cause fracture of the bone. It is particularly common as an injury site in athletes.

Interesting fact

The name navicular is derived from the boat-like shape of the bone. It has a highly concave articular surface which makes the bone appear like a small boat.
