The sphenoid bone is located at the base of the skull. The butterfly-shaped bone is one of the several bones that form the eye socket.

Functions

Functions include protecting the brain and forming a part of the eye sockets.

Disease/ injury/ fractures

The conditions that afflict the bone are trauma and basilar skull fracture. The tumor in the tissues that line the brain near the sphenoid bone is more common in females over the age of 50.

Interesting fact(s)

The sphenoid bone is called the ‘keystone’ of the cranial floor as it is in contact with all of the other skull bones.
