TEMPORAL BONE

The two bones located, one on each side, in the skull that forms the temples of the forehead, are called temporal bones. They contribute to the formation of sides as well as the base of the skull.

Functions

The shape of the bone facilitates hearing process. It protects the base of the brain and parotid gland located near the ear. It also protects a number of blood vessels in the vicinity. It forms the joint of the jaw along with the mandible (jaw bone) called as temporo-mandibular joint. This joint facilitates chewing.

Disease/Injury/Fractures

Trauma or blow and fracture of temporal bone can cause hearing loss, injure brain and even cause death.

Interesting fact(s)

Pressure applied to the temples with thumbs while placing fingers on forehead for 30 seconds helps relieve the headache.
