Larynx is commonly called as voice box. The larynx has vocal cords which are necessary for phonation. The vocal cords are situated just below where pharynx splits into trachea and oesophagus. It is a short tube located in the throat, below the hyoid bone and tongue and in front of oesophagus.

Functions:

Larynx performs the following important functions like protection of lower airways, phonation (production of voice), and respiration (breathing). Larynx regulates flow of air. While eating the entrance to the larynx is shut which prevents food from entering the wind pipe therefore prevents choking. Sound is generated in the larynx and that is where pitch and volume are manipulated. The strength of expiration of lungs also contributes to loudness.

Diseases:

Disorders of larynx include inflammation and swelling of larynx. There are two types acute and chronic laryngitis. Polyps and nodules are caused by prolong exposure to cigarette smoke. Laryngeal perichondritis the inflammation of the perichondrium of laryngeal cartilages, causing air way obstruction.

Interesting Facts:

Sound is generated in the larynx so talking is the function of larynx which is best used by the women. On average women say 7,000 words per day. Men manage just over 2000 words.
