An early morning walk in the sun has numerous health benefits. According to recent studies, keeping diabetes at bay is one of them!

Until now, one believed that vitamin D is essential for the body to keep the bones strong and healthy. Recent studies also have shown how vitamin D can keep blood pressure under control. But the latest and most interesting finding is how vitamin D can help prevent diabetes.

Based on observations on several studies, researchers say that vitamin D lowers the risk of diabetes by 21%.

This underrated vitamin is found in certain foods, but the body’s main source remains from sunlight.
It improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin. That means, in cases of type II diabetes, where the insulin resistance is the major culprit, vitamin D plays a significant role.

Vitamin D, according to some scientists, plays a role in regulating the insulin secreting the insulin from the pancreas.

Normal vitamin D levels are 20-56 ng/ml, with anything below 20 ng/ml considered as deficient. Increasing the levels to 60-80 ng/ml can help keep the sugar levels within the normal range.

On the basis of these findings, there are going to be several more studies held in which pre-diabetic people will be given vitamin D3 and will be monitored over several years. The main aim here is to prove conclusively that Vitamin D is crucial to prevent development of diabetes.

So, till the time we have a conclusive evidence, we can all go out and soak up the sun, it won’t do us much harm anyway!
