An overview of occupational therapy

Occupational therapy helps to address physical, mental, social, sensory and perceptual performance in people who are mentally or physically disabled. Occupational therapy is defined by the World Federation of Occupational therapists as, “a client-centered health profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation”. Occupational therapists also provide support to the elderly who are going through physical and mental changes because of old age. Occupational therapy is provided to people after an individualized evaluation of their needs. An examination of the home, school or workplace is also conducted and accordingly the occupational therapist recommends specialized equipment. They provide training and guidance to the family members and caregivers. They also work out a plan that will enable the individual to fit well into the social, school or work environment despite the problems they are facing. Therapists work in hospitals, schools, special schools, private & corporate enterprises, daycare centers, clinics, rehabilitation centers and even visiting the patients’ homes.
