Preventive Measures
Arthritis cannot be absolutely prevented because of certain non-modifiable causes that are out of your control such as advancing age, family history, or being a woman (yes, women are at higher risk of arthritis!).
Yet there are some healthy habits one can follow to reduce the risk of developing painful and aching joints.
- Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese can take a real toll on your lower limbs and joints as your knees have to support your body’s weight. Overweight people are almost 4 times more prone to getting knee osteoarthritis.
- Eat more fish: People who eat a lot of fish are at lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis as most of the fishes contain omega-3 fatty acid which helps in reducing inflammation in the body. As per nutritionist’s recommendation, fishes which are high in omega-3 acids such as salmon, trout, and mackerel should be eaten at least twice a week.
- Keep moving: Movement and exercise are highly beneficial in preventing arthritis as it takes the excess weight off your joints by maintaining an optimum weight. It also helps in strengthening the muscles around the joints, which protects them from any wear and tear.
- Avoid getting hurt: With age, joints start to wear out naturally and when you injure them accidentally while playing sports or due to any other incident, the cartilage gets damaged and makes it to wear out more speedily.
- Mind your posture: Right posture while sitting, working, and lifting heavy things can help protect joints from day-to-day strains. For example, while picking up an object from the ground, work with your knees and hips rather than exerting pressure on the back.
- Visit a doctor early: If you notice signs & symptoms of arthritis, do not ignore. See a doctor at the earliest. The longer you delay to seek treatment, the more havoc it can bring.
