FRONTAL BONE

The frontal bone forms the front portion of the skull, forehead, roof of the nose, and the roof of the bony sockets of eyes. The frontal lobes of the brain are located near the forehead behind the frontal bone.

Function

This bone forms the structure and shape of the forehead. It contributes to the strength and shape of the skull and supports and protects the brain.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

Frontal bone can be fractured due to blow on the head and fall on the sharp or hard surface. Fracture of the bone can be a medical emergency as it poses a risk of injury to the brain. Fracture of the bone can also injure eyes or structures deep inside the nose.

Interesting Fact(s)

Word frontal is derived from ‘frons’ meaning forehead. The bone is unpaired in human beings and paired in animals.
