HAMATE

HAMATE

Hamate is a wedge-shaped bone of the wrist with a hook-like process (extension). It is also called as the unciform bone due to its hook-like extension. It is located in the front row, out of the two rows of small bones of the wrist, close to finger bones.

Function

It gives strength and flexibility to the wrist joint. The hook-shaped bone functions as a protection to the sheath of tendons, nerves, and blood vessels that travel from the arm to the fingers of the hand.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

The bone is commonly fractured as a result of fall or during sports like golf or tennis in which a racquet when swung hard can put stress on the bone and fracture it.
