INCUS

INCUS

The incus is one of the small bones of the middle ear. It transmits sound from middle ear to the inner ear.

Function

The bone acts as a connection. It receives sound waves captured by the malleus in the middle ear and transmits it to the stapes (bone) in the inner ear.

Disease/ injury/ fracture

Any abnormality in the bone leads to failure to detect the sound. The function of the bone is impeded due to trauma or infection in the middle ear.

Interesting fact(s)

Incus means anvil. Anvil is an instrument which was earlier used to shape the horseshoe.

The bones in the ear are called as ossicles.
