INFERIOR NASAL CONCHA

The inferior nasal concha is a spongy curved bone present inside the nose along the outer wall. These are convex in shape to provide more room inside the nose cavity. The bones are covered with mucus. Mucus is a thin layer of lubricating material. Similarly, there are superior and medial nasal conchae. All three are arranged like shelves in nose and have similar function.

Function

It works to purify the inhaled air. When the air is breathed through nose, it passes through these conchae and gets warmed and humidified by the mucus and made suitable for the lungs. All the impurities like dust, mites, smoke, etc. get caught up in the mucus and thus prevented from entering body.

Disease/injury/fracture

A condition called conchae bullosa is characterized by formation of air pocket in middle turbinate. It can add to sinus problems and may need surgery.

Interesting fact(s)

The nasal conchae are formed during the fifth month of pregnancy. They are also called as turbinates.
