LACRIMAL BONE

LACRIMAL BONE

The lacrimal bone is the smallest bone of the face, situated within the eye socket. It is a flat and thin bone found on the inner side of the eye socket near the nose.

Function

This bone provides structural support to the tear gland in the eye. The bone serves as a pathway for the tube that transports tears.

Disease/ Injury/Fractures

It is a very small and fragile bone. Trauma to the face can fracture this bone. Inflammation of the eye socket can affect lacrimal bone.

Interesting fact(s)

The two important structures of the eye are present in the lacrimal bone: a lacrimal sac for excess tears and nasolacrimal duct or tear duct that transmits tears from lacrimal sac to nose. Now this explains why we have a watery nose when we cry.
