LUNATE

The lunate is a crescent-shaped bone of the wrist. The bone is located in the center of the upper row of the bones of wrist joint at the base of the hand.

Function

The Lunate bone helps the wrist to move smoothly and also helps movement of fingers.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

The lunate is dislocated due to falling. Athletes such as tennis player, baseball players, and basketball players dislocate the bone during play. Kienbock’s disease is a condition where the blood supply to the bone is interrupted. Pain in the wrist is the main symptoms of the disease, along with swelling and it may lead to loss of movement.

Interesting fact

The name comes from half-moon like shape of the bone. It is the wrist bone that gets most easily dislocated.
