MANDIBLE

The mandible is the bone of lower jaw. It begins in front of one ear and extends from one ear to the other forming a U shaped bone structure. This middle U-shaped part of the bone forms the structure of the chin and lower jaw that holds the lower teeth.

Function

The main function involves supporting the lower part of the face and holding the lower teeth in place. The bone is essential for the movements of the mouth while chewing the food. It gives structure to the face.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

Facial injuries due to accidents can fracture the bone. In addition to the fracture, dislocation of jaw called as mandibular dislocation may occur. Another medical condition associated is periodontitis. It is a gum disease, which can cause resorption of bone forming the teeth sockets. In extreme cases, the bone is eroded and the teeth are lost.

Interesting fact(s)

Good looking mandibles with jaws that come down forming straight line to make extreme angles at chin look attractive and this jaw line forms a paradigm of beauty.

Anxious people have the habit of clenching the jaw unknowingly. This action of clenching the jaw and gnashing teeth is called as bruxism.
