PISIFORM

Pisiform is the bone located in the wrist. It is also known as Lentiform bone. It is a small knobbly pea-shaped bone. It is the outermost bone in the wrist located below the pinky finger.

Function

The solitary function of this bone is to increase torque (ability to overcome resistance) and aid rotation of the wrist and hand. Generally, while twisting and turning, the thing falls on the side. The pisiform bone creates torsion in the wrist and prevents the complete turning of the hand during twist and turn movements.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

This bone is fractured very rarely. Bone gets fractured along with other hand injuries or other bone fractures in the region of hand and wrist. Fracture of this bone may damage the nerve in the area resulting in reduced grip strength.

Interesting /fact(s)

It is a sesamoid bone. The sesamoid bones are round masses of bones located in some tendon (connecting band between muscle and bone is called as tendon) at points where they are subjected to great pressure.
