STAPES

The stapes is one of the three bones located in the middle ear. It is the smallest and the lightest bone in the human body.

Function

 

It transmits the sound waves from Incus to the inner ear membrane.

 

Disease/ injury/ fracture

 

The function of this delicate bone can be compromised due to health issues and diseases. But it can be repaired. Otosclerosis (abnormal bone growth) can cause hearing loss.

 

Interesting fact(s)

The stapes is the only bone that is fully grown at birth.
