TIBIA

Tibia is the scientific name for the shinbone. It is large and strong bone located on inner side of leg between the knee and ankle along with another thin bone called fibula. It is the second largest bone in the human body. You can feel the bony ridge running down the front of the leg. It is not covered by any muscle.

Function

The primary function of the bone is locomotion or movement along with other bones of the leg. It also bears the weight of the body while standing upright. It provides shape and support to the legs.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

The tibia is more likely to fracture than any other bone in the body. It can be a hairline fracture caused due to stress like running or severe fracture resulting from high impact events associated with contact sports or automobile accidents.

Shin splints or tibial stress syndrome is another type of injury. It affects athletes and is caused due to trauma and stress on the bone and tissues surrounding it. It is a less serious condition and heals on its own most of the times.
