TRAPEZIUM

The trapezium is the small bone of the wrist. It is situated between the wrist below and the bone of the thumb above. The bone is roughly oblong in shape and approximately the size of pebble.

Function

The bone ensures flexibility and pain-free movement of the wrist. It aids the thumb to twirl, twist or grasp the things.

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

The fracture of the bone can occur due to a direct blow. Isolated fracture is rare. Degenerative changes of the bone can lead to arthritis of the thumb.

Interesting fact(s)

Due to its hinge-like nature that helps in free movement along with other bones, the bone is of great importance despite very small size.
