Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of the disease is unknown. It is thought to be hereditary.
Clinical presentation
Patient presents with frequent middle ear infections, growth problems, hearing problems, unusual looking face. There is presence of short hands and legs. Underdeveloped short flat nose is seen. Eyes that are spaced far apart are seen. There are extra folds of skin on the nose. Mental retardation is common in these patients. There are learning disabilities. Swelling and pain in the joints, i.e., arthritis is seen.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. X ray of bones reveals lack of bone development and deformities.
Treatment
There is no particular treatment for acrodysostosis. Symptomatic treatment helps in managing the patient. Surgical corrections are done wherever required. Early diagnosis and intervention is necessary which contribute to the treatment.
Other Modes of treatment
The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating acrodysostosis. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization and considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms. Similarly the Ayurvedic system of medicine, which uses herbal medicines and synthetic derivates, is also found to be effective in treating acrodysostosis.
