Causes and risk factors
Arcus senilis is caused due to deposition of lipid around the cornea. High level of cholesterol in body can lead to this; however, the exact modus operandi is not known.
Clinical presentation:
Arcus senilis is caused due to deposition of lipids around the cornea. A white or grey layer is seen surrounding the cornea. The deposition starts either at the bottom or at the top and slowly it starts spreading upwards and gradually surrounds the entire cornea. However, it does not hamper the vision of an individual, neither can it cause any complaints. It hampers the cosmetic appearance of an individual.
Investigations:
Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the examination carried out by the ophthalmologist. The ophthalmologist may suggest lipid profile along with routine blood test.
Treatment:
As the patient does not suffer from any complaints, the treatment aims at controlling the high cholesterol levels which causes it. Hence medications to control the high levels of lipids are advised.
