Causes and risk factors
Exposure to certain drugs or food substances causes initiation of rash in people who were previously sensitized for the particular agent. Substance like mercury or nickel, and drugs, particularly ampicillin, are the major contributing factors. Contact of skin with the causative agent causes appearance of rash. However, the exact mechanism as why the rash particularly appears on the gluteal area is still a mystery. This condition is said to be systemic contact dermatitis.
Clinical presentation:
Baboon syndrome is characterized by appearance of a red rash, particularly on gluteal region. Reddish discoloration is seen. The rash can also be seen on upper thigh or other folds of the skin .In a few cases, itching can be seen. Wearing of tight innerwear and pressure can cause discomfort.
Investigations:
Diagnosis can be done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patients and the physical examination carried out by the dermatologist. Detailed history taken from the patient will help the doctor to evaluate the cause. Routine blood test and allergy test, patch test, or oral drug challenge test can be recommended by the consultant.
Treatment:
Stopping the intake of causative agent is the first line of treatment. Topical application of steroid is advised. Use of certain soothing agents or emollients for reliving the complaint is helpful.
Other modes of treatment:
Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the symptoms. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms.
