Bartholin’s cyst

Bartholin’s cyst is caused due to blockage of Bartholin’s duct or glands which are present on both sides and slightly posterior to the opening of vagina. The gland secretes mucus and lubricates the vagina. The cyst is non infective but is painful on touch and causes discomfort. The size of cyst may vary from a pea to an egg.

Causes and risk factors

Bartholin’s cyst is caused due to mucus plug or an infection in the gland or the duct. The cyst may develop further bacterial infection forming an abscess.

Clinical presentation

Small cysts don not cause any pain. Whereas if the cyst is of considerable size, it may cause pain while walking, sitting, during intercourse. Cyst is visible, about 1 to 4 cm, medial to labia minora usually affecting only one side.

Investigation

Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis.

Treatment

No treatment is needed if the patient is asymptomatic. A doctor may advise sitz bath. Incision and drainage is done if there is abscess. If cyst is occurring repeatedly surgical removal of the gland and duct is done.
