Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of this condition is not known. It is considered to be caused due to certain genetic factors. Circulating hormones like testosterone and androgens can also trigger this condition, but the exact mechanism is not known. Abnormality in the ectodermic layer of the skin also can contribute to the same.
Clinical presentation:
Appearance of irregular brownish discoloration patch is the characteristic feature seen. The discoloration often resembles like a tan. They are usually seen on the upper trunk or shoulder region. Particularly, they are seen on one side of the body. The discoloration tends to become darker after puberty. Hair or acne development can be seen in the discolored patches.
Investigations:
Usually to diagnose these birth marks no investigations are required. Clinical examination is sufficient for this. Skin biopsy and histological examination can also be done.
Treatment:
There is no effective treatment yet available for this condition. However, various treatment ways can be adopted. Hair removal by the laser technique or electrolysis can be done. For pigmentation, pigment laser can be done. In cases of presence of acne, standard acne therapies are recommended.
