Broken collarbone

The collarbone known as clavicle is one of the long and only bone which lies horizontally. It is a palpable bone which connects the shoulder to the hand. Broken collarbone is defined as complete fracture or hairline crack occurring in clavicle. This type of fracture is more commonly seen in children and in young adults.

Causes and risk factors

Injury either due to fall or severe blow, falling on outstretched hand is the most important reason for the fracture. Road traffic accidents contribute to it. Repeated activities which imply great force on the bones like running or jumping can also lead to fracture. In newborn babies the fracture of the clavicle tends to be high during birth.

 

Clinical presentation:

A patient with collarbone fracture will present with pain along with inability to move the hand, particularly the arm. Pain may be induced on activity or movement. Sharp, aching pain is felt. The affected area is swollen and tender on touching. Deformity of the bone of affected side is seen. The shoulder sags down. Due to fracture of the bone, the bone is lifted up resulting in a bump on the affected side.

 

Investigations:

Diagnosis is done of the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the orthopedic doctor. Investigations which are done are X-ray of the bone. Routine X-rays or specialized digital X-rays along with CT scan and MRI are advised.

 

Treatment:

Rest to the affected area is the first step to be implemented. An arm sling or cast support is recommended for immobilization. Analgesic or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs are advised by the orthopedic doctor. Surgery for severe fractures is done. Post surgical rehabilitation measures are recommended which includes-Monitoring of diet and nutrition and physiotheraphic exercises for strengthening of muscles.

 

Other Modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up the symptom. Taking into consideration the symptoms in holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms.
