Causes and risk factors
Cellulitis is caused due to bacterial infection particularly staphylococci and streptococci
Certain factors like dry skin, Skin rashes which causes severe itching, Spider bites, Burns predispose cellulitis. Pregnancies, diabetes, obesity, use drugs take intravenously or intradermal also lead to cellulitis. Immuncompromised people are at high risk for developing the infection. Chicken pox and shingles which causes opening in the skin may provide an entry for the bacteria resulting in cellulitis.
Symptoms
Besides the layers of the skin it can also affect the lymph nodes and bloodstream. Hence one should seek immediate medical care. The commonest site of affection is the leg and face; however other areas can also be affected. The cardinal symptoms of cellulitis are pain in the affected area and fever. The affected area is hot touch, the skin becomes red and swelling is seen. Cellulitis can cause complications like Abscess and necrotizing fasciitis. Recurrent cellulitis can affect the lymphatic system.
Investigations
The diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and physical examination. Certain tests which can be done are routine blood test and blood cultures.
Treatment
Antibiotic administration is the main line of treatment. It is either done orally or intravenously. Elevation of the affected area is advised. Proper care of the skin should be taken.
