Causative & risk factors
Chondromalacia patella can result due to trauma or repeated stress on the knee joint. Muscular problems affecting the hip or knee muscles can also lead to cartilage damage.
Due to their high activity levels, young people are more prone to this condition. Women are at a higher risk of developing this condition compared to men.
Clinical presentation
The patient experiences a dull pain in the anterior portion of the knee joint. The pain worsens while squatting or taking the stairs. Any position that causes the knee joint to bend excessively worsens the pain.
Investigations
The doctor will first perform a physical exam of the knee joint. Later imaging tests such as X-rays, CT or MRI scans are suggested.
Treatment
Any stress to the knee joint must be avoided such as squatting, jumping or climbing stairs. Ice application is advised to reduce the pain and inflammation.
If the pain is severe, pain-relieving drugs are prescribed.
Physical therapy is suggested.
Patients who do not respond to conservative treatment may need surgical intervention. The surgery can be performed arthroscopically or as an open procedure.
