Clinical presentation
The deformity of the toes causes the toe joint nearest the ankle to bend upward and the other toe joints to bend downward. There is too much arching of the foot. Patient complains of pain while walking, difficulty in running. There is instability if the defect is of one foot only. The abnormal shape of the toe can cause increased pressure and calluses or ulcers on the affected toes. Claw toes are not usually dangerous, but they may be the first sign of a more serious disease of the nervous system.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. Muscle, nerve, and spine problems may be elicited.
Treatment
Treatment includes wearing shoes with plenty of room. One can also use a special pad to help take some pressure off the ball of the foot. Medical care includes treatment of underlying disorder, if any. The doctor might tape the toes or advice to wear a splint to keep them in the right position if they are still flexible. Further treatment consists of surgery if the conservative measures fail.
