Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of cradle cap is unknown. But it is believed to be caused due to hormonal changes, when the hormones pass from mother to the foetus through placenta. There is abnormal production of sebum. Infection with yeast called Malassezia which is present in the sebum is also responsible for cradle cap.
Clinical presentation
Patient presents with redness of the affected skin or scalp, formation of scales/dandruff which is white or yellow in colour. Intense itching of affected parts, greasiness of the skin, formation of crusts, loss of hair are additional signs.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the dermatologist helps in diagnosis. Skin biopsy is done sometimes if needed. The condition should be differentiated from psoriasis of scalp or simple dandruff.
Treatment
Medicated shampoos and lotions form the main line of treatment. Topical lotions containing corticosteroid drugs, antifungal creams are given. Oral medications such as, antibiotics may be required. Home treatment involves gentle massaging of baby’s scalp with fingers, and brush with smooth towel to remove the scales. Oil therapy such as rubbing almond oil on the scalp and gently removing scales will also help in managing cradle cap.
Other Modes of treatment
The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating cradle cap. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms. Similarly the ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbal medicines and synthetic derivates are also found to be effective in treating cradle cap.
