Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of cubitus valgus is unknown. It can be as a result of congenital deformity. Conditions such as Noonan syndrome, Turner’s syndrome can be associated with this deformity. Fracture involving upper extremity such as supracondylar and lateral condylar fractures can also cause cubitus valgus deformity.
Clinical presentation
Patient presents with a deformity of elbow with an increased carrying angle, i.e., when the arm is extended at the side of the body, palm facing forwards, the forearm and hand are placed at an angle of more than 15°. It results in an increased angle between shaft of humerus and shaft of ulna. Hence forearm goes away from midline.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. X-ray of the affected arm confirms the diagnosis. CT scan may be required.
Treatment
No treatment is required for most patients. Surgical correction may be done for cosmetic concerns.
