Cubitus varus deformity

Cubitus varus is a cosmetic deformity where the extended forearm is deviated towards the midline of the body. It is also called as Gunstock deformity.

Causes and risk factors

Cubitus varus deformity is caused as a result of growth disturbance of distal humeral epiphysis. Medial displacement or internal rotation of the joint, soft tissue interposition results in the deformity. Fracture of lower end of humerus can cause cubital varus deformity.

Clinical presentation

Forearm deviated towards midline of the body. There is decreased angle between shaft of humerus and shaft of ulna, angled inwards. There is permanent adduction of forearm when elbow is in full extension. There is marked abrupt movement of forearm towards the ulnar side. When elbow is viewed from behind, it shows prominent olecranon process. There is flattening of inner side of elbow and fullness on the outer side.

Investigation

Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. X-ray of the affected arm confirms the diagnosis. CT scan may be required.

Treatment

No treatment is required for most patients. Surgical correction may be done for cosmetic concerns.
