Causes and risk factors
The posturing is caused due to severe spinal cord injury or brain trauma. It can occur on one or both the sides of body. This posture can be caused as a result of intracranial hemorrhage, brain tumor, severe head injury, raised intracranial pressure, stroke, and encephalopathy.
Clinical presentation
Patient with decorticate posture in supine position presents with a stiff body, legs extended and rotated inwards, plantar flexion is seen. Arms are bent at elbows and held towards the chest, they are extended at the shoulders. Fists are clenched, wrists internally rotated and flexed. The body is stiff and rigid.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. CT, MRI of brain is required. EEG may be done. Blood and urine examination is done. Cerebral angiography may be advised. Intracranial pressure monitoring may be required.
Treatment
Treatment depends upon the underlying cause which needs to be investigated and treated. This condition is a medical emergency and the patient should be rushed to the hospital as soon as possible.
