Causes and risk factors
Exact cause of double uterus is not known. In foetal development of a female, a uterus develops from 2 tubes or ducts called mullerian ducts. These ducts fuse to form one single large hollow organ i.e. uterus. Sometimes the tubes don’t fuse and continue as two tubes separately. This causes development of a double uterus. It also contains double cervix and double vagina. This condition is associated with abnormalities in kidney.
Clinical presentation
Many times patient is asymptomatic. A woman doesn’t experience anything even after pregnancy. Some patients however may experience symptoms such as unusual pressure during menstrual period, severe dysmenorrhoea, bleeding inspite of using a tampon, difficulty in sexual intercourse, repeated miscarriages, and infertility.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the gynaecologist helps in diagnosis. Abnormality can be suspected if the patient has above complaints and during routine pelvic exam. Doctor may advice an USG of abdomen and pelvis, sonohysterogram, hysterosalpingography, MRI scan for further detail evaluation.
Treatment
No treatment is required for asymptomatic patients. In case of frequent abortions surgical intervention is required to sustain pregnancy. There are chances of multiple pregnancies, IUGR, malpresentation, preterm delivery, post partum haemorrhage. LSCS is preferred to avoid complications.
