Ear Cysts

Ear Cysts

A cyst is a fluid filled or semisolid material containing sac. Ear cysts can be either sebaceous cysts or cholesteatoma. Sebaceous cysts in the ear are very common.

Causes and risk factors

The exact cause of ear cysts is unknown. Sebaceous cysts are thought to occur when the skin glands produce excessive oil. Cholesteatoma usually occurs as a result of Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Clinical presentation

Presence of a lump on, behind, or in front of an ear. The swelling can be present on ear pinna, lobule, or concha. Pain may be present. There is discomfort in the ear. Recurrent ear infections can occur. There can be gradual loss of hearing in the affected ear.

Investigation

Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. Sometimes, a CT scan may be advised.

Treatment

No treatment is required for asymptomatic patients. A painless sebaceous cyst needs no treatment as well. Antibiotics can be prescribed. A sebaceous cyst or cholesteatoma must be surgically excised.

Other Modes of treatment

The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating ear cyst.  Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization and considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms.
