Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of ear cysts is unknown. Sebaceous cysts are thought to occur when the skin glands produce excessive oil. Cholesteatoma usually occurs as a result of Eustachian tube dysfunction.
Clinical presentation
Presence of a lump on, behind, or in front of an ear. The swelling can be present on ear pinna, lobule, or concha. Pain may be present. There is discomfort in the ear. Recurrent ear infections can occur. There can be gradual loss of hearing in the affected ear.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. Sometimes, a CT scan may be advised.
Treatment
No treatment is required for asymptomatic patients. A painless sebaceous cyst needs no treatment as well. Antibiotics can be prescribed. A sebaceous cyst or cholesteatoma must be surgically excised.
