Causes and risk factors
The tendonitis can be caused due to trauma or overuse of muscle. Risk factors associated with the development of this condition are poor foot biomechanics [especially flat feet], poor flexibility, poorly fitted shoes, inadequate warm-up, muscle weakness, inadequate rehabilitation following previous injury.
Clinical presentation
Patient complains of pain in the region of the inner ankle which may travel down into the big toe. Pain with rest following activities requiring strong or repetitive contraction of the flexor hallucis longus muscle such as standing on the balls of the feet, running [especially uphill or on uneven surfaces], jumping, hopping, etc. As the condition progresses, patient may also experience pain during these activities affecting performance. There is tenderness on touching the flexor hallucis longus tendon.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. USG is required. MRI scan is recommended.
Treatment
Complete rest is necessary for the treatment of the condition. Ice application will help in managing the tendonitis. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be required. Physiotherapy will contribute further to the treatment.
Other Modes of treatment
The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating flexor hallucis longus tendonitis. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization and considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms.
