Frontal Lobe Seizures

A seizure is a disorder of central nervous system caused by problems in the electrical signals of the brain characterised by abnormal activities of brain. Seizures are of two types – primary generalised and partial seizures. Primary generalised involves both sides of brain. Partial seizures involve only a limited area of the brain. Frontal lobe seizures are those arising from frontal lobe of the brain.

Causes and risk factors

Frontal lobe seizures are caused by factors such as tumours, stroke, infections, trauma to frontal lobe of brain. It can also be genetically inherited called as nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy. Family history of seizures is a major risk factor for developing the disease.

Clinical presentation

Frontal lobe is responsible for variety of functions like motor functions, language, impulse control, memory, judgement, problem solving, and social behaviour. The seizures last for less than 1 minute. However whole episode i.e. fatigue, tiredness, weakness, may last from 30 minutes to an hour up to regaining full consciousness. They occur usually during sleep. Signs include movement of eye and head to one side. Patient gives no response and has difficulty in talking. The seizures may be startling including screaming. Patient shows vague changes in posture, repetitive movements of hands and legs such as twisting, pedalling etc. weakness and inability to use muscles. Seizures occur in clusters.

Investigation

Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. an EEG is recommended. Imaging studies such as CT scan, MRI scan is useful for further evaluation.

Treatment

Treatment involves medications i.e. anti seizure drugs. Further treatment consists of surgery which involves pinpointing areas of brain which are affected. Surgery involves isolating the focal area and removing the focal point. Vagus nerve stimulation will also help in managing frontal lobe seizures. Implantation of neurostimulator contributes further to the treatment.

Other Modes of treatment

The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating frontal lobe seizures. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization considers a person in a holistic way. Similarly the ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbal medicines and synthetic derivates are also found to be effective in treating frontal lobe seizures.
