Genital Malodor In Women

A bad odor from the genital area is termed as genital malodor.

Causes and risk factors

Normally the  discharges from the vaginal secretions have a musty odor; however, certain infections and noninfectious causes can lead to a bad odor from discharges. Infections, particularly bacterial – trichomoniasis or Candida infection are the common causes. Noninfectious causes also contribute to the same. Pelvic inflammatory diseases, vulval ulceration or fistula are other leading causes. Poor personal hygiene, gastric complaints like chronic constipation and bloating in abdomen due to certain dietary factors are the other contributing causes. Urinary and fecal incontinence along with certain psychological factors can eliminate bad odors through pelvic openings which can lead to malodor in the genital area.

 

Clinical presentation

The woman usually comes up with complaints of a foul odor from the vagina. This often results in embarrassment and irritation. Some may also complain of excessive itching and abnormal vaginal discharges. Soreness can be another associated complaint. Pain may be present. The foul odor persists in spite of frequent washes and also can lead to avoidance of sexual life.

 

Investigations

Diagnosis is done on the basis of clinical examination and certain investigations. It is essential to exclude other conditions too. Per vaginal and per rectal examinations are carried out. Culture examination of the discharges are done. Along with this, ultrasonography of the abdomen and pelvis is recommended. Certain other investigations, if needed, can also be advised.

 

Treatment:

Treatment depends upon the causation. Maintainenece of hygienic condition of the genital area is the most important step to be adopted. The underlying cause is to be treated first. Medications like antifungal or antibiotics are advised. Regular changing of inner wear is a must. Avoid wearing tight clothes. Use of nonsoap cleaners for cleaning is advised. Avoid use of things like douching, antiseptics, or deodorants which can lead to irritation.

 

Other Modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the disease. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
