Causes and risk factors
Poor oral hygiene results in deposition of plaques on teeth which forms tartar. This tartar acts as a harbor for the infective agents to thrive. Bacterial infection is the main cause of inflammation of the gums. When this infection is neglected it results in further deterioration of the teeth and its related structures.
Certain predisposing factors for this are Poor nutrition, Old age, certain medications, Hormonal disturbance, Use of certain toxic substances like tobacco and smoking.
Symptoms
The patient comes up with complaints of pain in gums and bleeding on brushing teeth. Bluish and reddish discoloration of the gums occurs. Bad odor from mouth is complained by the accompanying person. Affection of these gums can further lead to loosening of teeth. It can result in periodontitis.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis can be made by the dentist on the basis of the symptoms narrated and on oral examination. X ray for periodontal involvement is seen.
Treatment
Antibiotic medications for control of infection are started. Scaling and debridement is done by the dentist. Root planning can be done; it provides a fine texture to the surface of the roots and prevents the further accumulation of the plaques. Measures for good oral hygiene like brushing the teeth twice daily, flossing regularly and rinsing the mouth on having meals must be adopted. Cleaning of the teeth from dentist at least once in 6 months should be done.
