Herpes Genital

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused due to Herpes simplex virus. Incidence is high in males as compared to females. Young adults are more commonly affected.

Causes and risk factors

There are two categories of herpes simplex virus- type I and Type II. Genital herpes is caused due to HSVII. It is transmitted due to indulgence in unsafe sexual intercourse with the infected person. Contact with the skin of a person who is suffering from herpes sore or blisters can also spread the infection. Immuncompromised person is at higher risk of getting the infection.

 

Clinical presentation

Incubation period is of 5-7 days. The common sites of affection seen are glans and shaft of penis, pubis and inner thigh areas. In females the infection occurs at the labia major and labia minora, cervix or vagina. The patients come up with complaints of small red or white eruptions on genital areas. These eruptions are filled with fluid. Burning, itching occurs. These eruptions can rupture and lead to ulcer formation.Headche, body ache, fever are the other symptoms seen. Abnormal discharges from vagina and penis along with difficulty in sexual intercourse and micturation is complained by the patient. Herpes can lead to rectal infection and meningitis. Infection occurring during pregnancy can risk the life of the child. It can lead to damage to the brain, blindness or even death.

 

Investigations

The diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and physical examination. The following investigations which can be done are routine blood test and viral cultures.

 

Treatment

A herpes genital has no cure. Anti viral medications can reduce the severity and recurrence of symptoms. Sexual activity should be abstained till the time the lesion heals.

Use barrier contraceptives like condoms during sexual intercourse. Avoid sexual intercourse with multiple partners.

 

Other modes of treatment

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up the symptom. Taking into consideration the symptoms in holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms.
