Causes and risk factors
Hot tub rash is caused due to bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This infection is caused due to contact with contaminated water. It is commonly seen during swimming. Poorly maintained spa and swimming pools are the source of such infection. People with weak immune system or those suffering from HIV and diabetes mellitus are more prone to such an infection.
Clinical presentation:
The complaints are seen for a few days to weeks after the contact with the contaminated water. The common site of affection is the back. The patient presents with complaint of redness of the affected area. Itching and small eruptions are the characteristic features seen. The eruptions are small skin lesions filled with fluid. Severe itching can lead to oozing of blood. On the contrary, itching itself can aggravate the complaint and give way for secondary infections.
Investigations:
Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the dermatologist. There is often a history of swimming or visit to a spa. Routine blood test, allergy test, and certain specialized blood tests along with culture examination are often diagnostic.
Treatment:
Usually in a few weeks the complaints resolve, however, if they persist the dermatologist can recommend certain anti-bacterial creams along with oral medications. Application of topical antibiotics can also be advised. Maintaining good skin care needs to be implemented. Use of appropriate skin moisturizer is suggested especially for dry skin. Bland, soothing moisturizers are recommended. Exposure to certain chemical and soaps should be avoided during this period. Proper maintenance of swimming pool and spa is needed. Wearing clean swimsuits and taking a shower after swimming is advised. Do not wear the swimsuits for a prolonged time.
Other modes of treatment:
