Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of kidney cyst is still not clear. Any injury or microscopic blockage in tubules contribute to the causation. Diverticuli can also form in the tubule which then get detached and form kidney cyst.
Symptoms
Usually the cysts do not pose any complaints and hence the patient can remain a symptomatic. While in some cases the patient complaints of pain in the lumbar region of the abdomen. On examination tenderness is present. Fever, frequent urination along with difficulty in passing urine are the other associated symptom. The urine is dark in color and there are traces of blood in urine. An individual suffering from kidney cyst also suffer from high blood pressure complaints. The cyst has chances of infection or increase in size causing pressure.
Investigations
Diagnosis is done on the basis of symptoms narrated by the patient and the examination carried out by the doctor. Most of the time the kidney cysts are diagnosed accidentally. Certain investigations which are recommended are urine analysis (Urine Routine and urine culture), complete blood count and renal function test. Renal ultrasound or CT scan is advised
Treatment
In cases of cyst which are small in size and do not pose any health effect needs no treatment. Regular follow ups are needed. The cysts may be drained by fine needle aspiration. While those posing complaints are treated with sclerotherpy. In large cysts laparoscopic surgery is needed.
