Causes and risk factors
Improper handling or usage of the lawn mower machine can lead to injury. Its sharp blades or power tank or hot gas can cause injury.
Clinical presentation:
The injury can range from mild to severe ones. It can lead to minor cuts or even amputation. The sharp blades of a mower can lead to cuts on the skin or even deep cuts. Such injuries are commonly seen on hands and feet. Burns can be caused due to contact with hot gas or electric power tank. Fractures can be caused due to the rotating blades. Most commonly open fractures are seen. These fractures often lead to secondary infections too. The sharp blades of the mower can severely cut a part of an arm, leg, or foot.
Investigations:
Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the doctor. Cuts and burns along with amputation can be easily diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination. X-ray is done to detect any fractures. In severe cases, MRI scan or CT scan can be done if necessary. Certain other investigations can also be advised as per the presentation of the patient.
Treatment:
The treatment is planed as per the presenting complaints of the patient. In case of minor injuries like cuts, they can resolve on their own while the deep ones need first aid treatment. Cleaning and bandaging is done. The treatment of burn varies as per the degree of burn. If the burns are minor (superficial burns), hold the affected area under water. In cases of large areas involved where even the clothes are burnt, remove the clothes so that it does not stick further. Treatment depends upon the degree of burns. Superficial burns which are minor ones at times, may not require any treatment. For such burns, medication and ointments are easily available over the counter. In deep and extensive burns, hospitalization may be needed. Intravenous fluids and medications are started. Pain relieving medications and antibiotics are started. Regular cleansing and dressing are needed. Decompressions or skin grafting is done. In case of amputation, surgical repair is needed. Surgery comprises of reattachment or complete removal. Along with this, use of certain assistive or prosthetic devices are advised. Physical therapy exercises are advised to improve the strength and flexibility of the muscles. One needs to maintain certain precautionary measures while operating the machine. Use of protective gears and gloves is a must. While using the appliance, one must read the instructions carefully. Keep the machine away from small kids. Remove stones or other objects before using the machine.
