Causes and risk factors
Metamorphopsia usually occurs in the elderly due to macular degeneration and neovascularization of the choroid. It occurs as a result of diseases of the visual receptors such as tumors or inflammation. Recent correction of a refractive disorder can also cause metamorphopsia. Other causes include retinal detachment, head injury, or overuse of drugs.
Associated diseases include choroiditis, rupture of the choroid, myopia, and ocular histoplasmosis syndrome.
Clinical presentation
Objects appear of a different size or shape or in a different location, as opposed to the actual dimensions. For example, a grid of straight lines appears wavy with intermittent blank spaces.
Investigations
An Amsler chart is used to detect metamorphopsia. A complete ophthalmic evaluation is essential in order to diagnose the underlying cause of metamorphopsia.
Treatment
Treatment for metamorphopsia involves identifying and treating the underlying cause of metamorphopsia.
